Joe has been building quads since 1981. The round pin quad has a distinct advantage over all other 3 fin boards of various tails, including the Quad fin bat tail and twinzer swallow tails.

The bottom rocker, fin placement, fin cant and toe are all crucial to the Quad fin being effective. The perfect combination of fin placement, board bottom and rocker creates a faster, more maneuverable board.

After 26 years of empirical testing, Joe has perfected the fin placement and bottom formula of the quad-fin. It has proven to work so well, he has refined this combination to work on his Hawaiian guns and tow-in boards; something the shaping world didn't even consider.

The dimensions of the round pin quad can also be blown up to accommodate larger, more aggressive surfers. No longer are bigger guys destined for longboards; if you can shred, Joe can custom build the perfect short board for you.

LOTS OF FINS, LOTS OF FUN

Thanks to their speed and maneuverability, four-fin boards are hot—and the Round Pin is the most evolved of this sweet breed. While most shapers are just now hopping on the quad wagon, San Diego shaping genius Joe Blair has been building them since the eighties. If you're an intermediate to advanced surfer who craves speed and whiplash turns, you'll love this mid-sized stick. It has a slight V behind the fins with single-to-double-barrel concave—which makes it crazy fast—and because the fins are clustered and moved slightly forward, we were able to crank turns more easily than on other thrusters we tested. 5'11"-7'4"; www.jblairsurf.com

Bonus: The slightly wide tail and 2.25-inch thickness make it magic to ride in lackluster surf. Bummer: If you tend to ride with a heavy front foot, you'll have trouble tapping into the natural speed this quad possesses.
